My Challenge is to...
Run 12.2km per day
for Nedd’s Uncomfortable Challenge
My challenge is uncomfortable for me because...
…the duck is a challenge on a good day let alone adding 2.2km and doing it 10 days straight! We want to know what we’re capable of, and you only ever find that out when things get hard. We've all got more in us than we think, and we’re about to get uncomfortable to prove it to ourselves. And it means something: every dollar I raise goes to We Are Mobilise, helping people experiencing homelessness across Australia get back on their feet. If you can chuck something in, you're part of it too. Lessssssssssgo!!!!
My updates
122 km in 10 days. This is going to be uncomfortable
Monday 12th OctLooking at my mileage over the last six months, I know I’m fit enough to run 12.2 km.
That’s not really the challenge.
The challenge starts next Monday: 12.2 km every day for 10 consecutive days. 122 km total.
My recent training has generally been around 30-45 km per week. So for these 10 days, I’m effectively asking my body to handle almost three times my normal weekly mileage, compressed into a very short period.
And that’s before everything else.
I’ll still be working 8 hour days, being a parent, socialising, getting up early, dealing with normal life and trying to recover enough to do it all again the following morning.
The first few days will probably feel easy. That’s the trap.
The real challenge will come around Day 5, 6, 7 and beyond, when the individual 12.2 km runs aren’t particularly difficult but the accumulated fatigue starts to change everything. Legs won’t feel as fresh. Sleep becomes more important. Small niggles become harder to ignore. Motivation will fluctuate.
And I already know my Achilles is going to be something I’ll need to manage carefully.
So this isn’t a fitness challenge in the traditional sense. I don’t need to prove that I can run 12.2 km.
It’s a challenge of durability, recovery and consistency.
There will be days when running is the easiest part of the day.
There will also be days when I’ve worked, dealt with family life, slept poorly, feel tired and still have to put the shoes on because Day 7 doesn’t care how I felt on Day 6.
122 km. 10 days. No days off.
