My Challenge is to...

Run 12.2km every day

for Nedd’s Uncomfortable Challenge

My challenge is uncomfortable for me because...

When I was struggling with my mental health, exercise, particularly running, became an unhealthy obsession for me when I was 15. Now at 24 (25 at the time of challenge) I have recovered from Anorexia Nervosa, complex-PTSD (due to family violence and medical trauma) and work in regional QLD in mental health lived experience. I support people from all walks of life, however so many of these individuals have struggled with housing insecurity either due to their mental health, or it impacts their mental health. At times throughout my journey, it’s easy to see how the mental health system is not set up to support unhoused people or those experiencing housing insecurity. Multiple times I was fearful of losing my accommodation due to being involuntarily held in hospitals, unable to work or pay rent, and just had to hope that my landlord wouldn’t kick me out and try and scrap money together to afford rent so I wouldn’t.

This challenge will be uncomfortable for me because I doubt myself, I still at times want to give up and take the easy way out of things rather than fighting that mental battle to keep going, and running is something that always represents that mental battle for me; just me and my mind for however many km’s I run for.

Recovery from mental health challenges is hard, and is a constantly exhausting battle, and you keep having to look at how far you’ve come to see the progress you’ve made, which is why I want to do this challenge. To show people that you can fight back, you can push yourself, recovery is uncomfortable, and to support individuals who are experiencing being unhoused.
